ચિત્રલેખાના દિપોત્સવી અંકમાં પ્રગટ થયેલી પાંચ – છ પાનાની મારી ટૂંકી વાર્તા ‘આનાકાની’ ને નવલકથાનું સ્વરૂપ આપવાનો અજંપો મનમાં ઘોળાતો હતો. ‘શેષ-વિશેષ’ રૂપે એ અજંપાનો અંત આવ્યો.

       પ્રારંભના પ્રકરણોમાં વાચકોને વાર્તાની ગતિ-વિધિથી બહુ ઉત્સાહ ના વર્તાયો હોય એ બનવા જોગ છે,ત્યારે એક વાચકે નિખાલસપણે લખ્યું હતું કે હરકિશન મહેતાની કલમમાં હવે કાંઈ રહ્યું નથી......પછી નવલકથા જેમ જેમ આગળ વાધતી ગઈ તેમ વાચકોના પ્રતિભાવ ચમ્ત્કારીકપણે પલટાતા ગયા અને અંતિમ પ્રકરણો દરમ્યાન તો વાર્તા હજુ લંબવાજો, અચાનક અંત લાવતા નહિ ,જેવા સૂચનોની ઝંડી વરસવા લાગી. એક પ્રકરણનો ખાડો પડ્યો તેમાં અનેક વાચકો તરફથી ઠપકો અને એકાદ બે વાચક તરફથી ધમકી સાથે ગાળો પણ મળી.

   ‘શેષ-વિશેષ’ મારા માટે વિશેષ પડકારરૂપ હતી અને તેની વિદાય તો એથીય વિશેષ કષ્ટદાયક રહી.
