મૂળે પાકિસ્તાનના પંજાબ પ્રાંત ને ગજાવનાર જગ્ગા ડાકુની કથા પહેલીવાર ગુજરાતીમાં લખાઈ તેનું જગ્ગાને પોતાને આશ્ચર્ય થયું હતું. જગ્ગાના ગામ રતીયાની મુલાકાત કરીને વર્ણન કરવાનું શક્ય ન બનતા હરકિસન મેહતાએ પોતાનું બાળપણ જ્યાં વીત્યું હતું એ મહુવાને જ નજર સામે રાખીને પ્રથમ પ્રકરણમાં રતિયા નું વર્ણન કર્યું હતું. અને પહેલા જ પ્રકરણમાં એક એવી પ્રણયકથાના બીજ તેમને વાવ્યા કે મારા જેવા ઘણાને આ ડાકુ કથા કરતા પણ વધારે પ્રણયકથા લાગે છે. સ્વાભાવિક છે કે જગ્ગાના જીવન પર આધારિત હોવાને કારણે આ નવલકથામાં જગ્ગાનું પાત્ર તો પ્રભાવક જ ચિતરવું પડે પણ આશ્ચર્યની વાત તો એ છે કે લેખકે એવો કોઈ જ વિશેષ પ્રયત્ન નથી કર્યો. તેમણે તો જે બન્યું હતું તેને એકદમ સરળ ભાષામાં રજુ કર્યું અને છાસમાંથી નિતરતા માખણની જેમ સ્વાભાવિક રીતે જ જગ્ગાનું પાત્ર પ્રભાવક બનાવી આપ્યું.
